Description

Rudbeckia 'Goldsturm' also known as the black eyed Susan has a striking daisy like golden - yellow flower with a dark centre. This favourite border perennial has a very long flowering season from mid summer through to autumn.

The flowers are supported by strong, upright stems which make it an excellent cut flower and large swathes of Goldsturm in any border or along a path or fence give a very dramatic display.

When to sow Indoors February to April, outdoors May to June.
Where to sow Sow thinly indoors in moist compost filled pots or trays 0.5cm (1/4in) deep and cover the seeds with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place in a warm position (temperature of 18-20°C (65-68°F) is ideal).
Sow direct outdoors in flowering position, 0.5cm (1/4in) deep.
What to do next When seedlings sown indoors are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays and grow on in cooler conditions.
When all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise indoor raised seedlings to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Then transplant into final growing position planting them 45cm (18in) apart.
Thin the seedlings sown outdoors out so they are 45cm (18in) apart. Carefully replant thinned plants to fill any gaps.
Water well until plants are established.
Deadhead to prolong flowering and encourage new flower buds.
Handy tips As a perennial the plants can be divided every few years from September to March.
Flowering period July to October.
Uses Ideal for cut flowers and as tall flower at the back of a border.
Height 60cm (24in)
