Description

Scabiosa atropurpurea 'Black knight' is a short lived, clump forming perennial producing pincushion-shaped flowers that rise on thin stems above the foliage throughout summer and early autumn.

The flowers are a deep maroon, almost black with contrasting white stigmas.

Great for adding height to beds and borders and bees and butterflies will love them too.

When to sow Sow indoors Jan to April and August to September.
Where to sow Sow indoors in moist compost filled pots or trays 0.5cm (1/4in) deep and cover the seeds with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place in a warm position (temperature of 15-20°C (60-68°F) is ideal).
What to do next When seedlings are large enough to handle and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Then transplant into final growing position planting them 30cm (12in) apart. 
Water well until plants are established. 
Handy tips Deadhead to prolong flowering and encourage new flower buds. 
Flowering period June to October.
Uses  Ideal for cut flowers and as a tall flower at the back of a border.
