Description

Broad Leaved Sage (or Garden Sage) has soft grey-green leaves with an aromatic flavour which makes a great addition to many dishes. This hardy perennial can either be grown in a pot or container or as an edible border plant.

Sage is not only an attractive and useful culinary and medicinal herb, but during summer its violet-blue flowers attract bees and butterflies. Sage is also a useful companion plant for cabbages and carrots as it repels both Cabbage white butterfly and carrot fly

When to Sow Sow indoors in February to May, or outside from April to May.
Where to Sow Grows best in light well drained soil, in a sunny position.
Sow seed on the surface of lightly firmed, barely moist seed compost in pots or trays, or into final growing position if sowing direct outdoors.
Cover with a sprinkle of finely sieved compost as they need some light to germinate.
What to do Next If sown indoors, when seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3in) pots and harden off the plants for 7 to 10 days.
Plant them outside in their final growing position once the risk of frost has passed, 38cm (15in) apart.
Whilst the plant is still young keep the compost moist however once established, since sage is a drought resistant plant, do not overwater.
Harvest March to October.
Handy Tips Don’t over-harvest the plant in the first year to allow the sage time to become established.
You can hang them to dry, since sage keeps much of its flavour when dried.
You can also store fresh leaves in the refrigerator or freezer.
Companion Planting Cabbage and Carrots as Sage repels cabbage white butterfly and carrot fly.
Nutritional Information Sage is an excellent source of fibre, Vitamin A, folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese and folic acid.
Serving Suggestion Sage is a great addition to meat dishes and goes particularly well with pork and poulty. Use in stuffing's, stews and soups.
