Big Smile Sunflower attracts bees and butterflies and is included on the RHS Perfect for Pollinators list.
|When to sow||February to May (February to March inside and April to May outside)|
|Where to Sow||Sunflowers need full sun (6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day - the more the better if you are trying to grow them to their maximum potential) and are best sown direct where they are to flower.|
|For earlier blooms sow indoors in pots, 1.5cm (3/4in) deep and keep at 13 to 18°C (55 to 65°F) until after germination.|
|Sow outdoors direct, either in pots or in a flower bed, 1.5cm (3/4in) deep and 30cm (12in) apart.|
|What to do Next||When the risk of frost has passed, transplant seedlings sown indoors to final flowering position after hardening off for 7 to 10 days.|
|Protect young plants from slugs with a cloche.|
|Water the plants regularly especially during dry periods.|
|Flowering period||July to September|
|Companion Planting||Good companion plant for peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes.|
|Uses||Grow in a border or pot. Good for cut flowers. Attracts Bees and Butterflies.|
