Description
Verbena Quartz Merlot mix is an attractive blend of solid burgundy, rose and white flowers, and burgundy flowers with white centres that look brilliant in containers, beds and hanging baskets.
Quartz Verbenas are very easy to grow and are spreading, mounded plants that produce large beautiful florets and dark green foliage.
When to sow | Indoors February to April. |
Where to sow | Sow indoors finely on the surface of moist compost filled pots or trays and cover the seeds with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. |
Place in a warm position (temperature of 18-25°C (65-77°F) is ideal).
Cover the container with dark paper or similar as the seeds need the dark to germinate. Place the container in a dark place.
What to do next | Once the seeds have germinated remove the dark paper and place in a light position and reduce the temperature to around 15°C (60°F) such as on a warm kitchen windowsill. |
Keep the compost on the dry side at all times, and water lightly as seedlings emerge.
When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays.
When all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Then transplant into final growing position planting them 30cm (12in) apart.
Flowering period | June to October |
Handy tips | Verbena plants like full sun, moderate water, and good drainage. Without good drainage they are prone to mildew. |
To encourage new blooms trim back the plants 1-2 times per season.
Uses | Grow in hanging baskets, containers and window boxes where they look beautiful spilling over the edges. |
Height | 25cm (10in) |
Spread | 30cm (12in) |
