We're patting ourselves on the back a little and saying what a great year 2018 has been, growing our own vegetables, herbs and chillies. It’s likely it is not entirely down to our expertise and hard work though and just maybe, the weather may have had a lot to do with it! But, gardening is all about dealing with the conditions you have and adapting to them and we've all had to do that this year. June has arrived already and after a very dry May we are already watering everything in our West Yorkshire garden and have watched some amazing growth spurts during the last 6 weeks or so. Our courgettes are all planted out, tomatoes and chillies potted on into final growing positions and beans already arching up their canes. Our new seed varieties Aubergine and Sweet Peppers all look good in the greenhouse, along with our Burpless Cucumber and our new Crystal Ice Cucumber plant (kindly given to us by the green fingered folk at Let’s Grow Preston). April is a busy month in the garden. It brings hopeful sunshine by day and can bring seedling killing frosts by night! It is the season of seed sowing, and our first lot of veggie seeds are being sown direct outdoors here in the Seeds to Sow garden in West Yorkshire. Things may be slightly different where you live, so always keep one eye on your local weather forecast. As I prepare to use the final of our fresh home grown produce from last year, a Jack ‘O’ Lantern Pumpkin which has stored fantastically over winter, I am excited that the new sowing season has finally arrived and that it won’t be too long until some varieties will be ready to harvest.
