When to Sow | October to February |
Where to Sow |
Sow indoors on the surface of moist compost filled pots or trays and cover the seeds with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place in a warm position (temperature of 18-22°C for 2 to 4 weeks) followed by 2-4°C for 4 to 6 weeks and then return to the warmth. Germination requires a warm/cold/warm cycle which mimics conditions in nature and can take several months. We find that sowing late autumn/ early winter in a greenhouse provides the best conditions for germination. |
What to do next | When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays and grow on in cooler conditions. |
When all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise indoor raised seedlings to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Then transplant into final growing position planting them 45cm (18in) apart.
Water well until plants are established.
Deadhead to encourage further flowering.
