Description

Also known as 'love in a mist' these carefree old-fashioned flowers will be in bloom all season long. An attractive mix of pale pink to deep rose flowers from June through to the first frost, coupled with fennel like leaves. Nigella is a tall hardy annual, growing well in groups in gaps in a border, to a height of 50-60cm.

Nigella makes a good cut and dried flower and can be left to self seed, with the seed pods being very attractive in dried flower displays.

When to Sow Sow in spring or autumn; March to May and September to October.
Where to Sow Nigella seeds are best sown direct outside where they are to flower as the seedlings do not transplant well.
Sow seeds thinly on the surface of well prepared compost and cover with fine compost and water well.

What to do Next Thin seedlings to 30cm (12in) apart, being careful not to disturb the roots.
Water well until plants are established.
Deadhead to prolong flowering and encourage new flower buds. Leave some seed heads on the plants at the end of the season if you want the plants to self-seed.  Self-seeded plants may flower in different colours to this mix.  Remove plants in the autumn when they have finished flowering.
